By volunteering to maintain a page, you are:

• saying you're very knowledgeable about the topic (you've probably done a lot of work on the page already)
• committing to keeping those pages updated for the long term, including editing them as needed to account for future PRs, policy updates, etc
• acknowledging that volunteering as page maintainer DOES NOT stop anyone else from editing the page - it just serves as a signal to everyone that you intend to keep it up to date
